OBJECTIVE: Chronic low back pain represents a substantial cost to employers through benefits coverage and days missed due to incapacity. We sought to explore the effectiveness of Naturopathic care on chronic low back pain. METHODS: This study was a randomized clinical trial. We randomized 75 postal employees with low back pain of longer than six weeks duration to receive naturopathic care (n = 39) or standardized physiotherapy (n = 36) over a period of 12 weeks. The study was conducted in clinics on-site in postal outlets. Participants in the naturopathic care group received dietary counseling, deep breathing relaxation techniques and acupuncture. The control intervention received education and instruction on physiotherapy exercises using an approved education booklet. We measured low back pain using the Oswestry disability questionnaire as the primary outcome measure, and quality of life using the SF-36 in addition to low back range of motion, weight loss, and Body Mass Index as secondary outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effectiveness of naturopathic care (NC) on rotator cuff tendinitis using a prospective randomized clinical trial design. METHODS: Canadian postal workers with rotator cuff tendinitis for a duration of >6 weeks were randomized to receive NC (n=43) or standardized physical exercises (PEs; n=42) over 12 weeks. Participants in the NC group received dietary counseling, acupuncture, and Pholgenzym (2 tablets, 3 times/day). The PE intervention group received passive, active-assisted, and active range of motion exercises and matched placebo. The primary outcome measure was the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), and secondary outcomes were the pain visual analog scale (VAS), Short Form 36 (SF-36), Measure Yourself Medical Outcomes Profile (MYMOP), and shoulder maximal range of motion. Chronic pain affects approximately one in five Canadians and costs the health-care system approximately $62 billion each year. The average sufferer has lived with chronic pain for six years, has tried an average of 2.4 prescribed pain medications, and their risk of committing suicide is doubled compared to those living without chronic pain. Osteoarthritis (OA) in particular is accompanied with chronic pain and, unlike other causes of chronic pain, does not resolve. Surgery for pain relief is indicated in some individuals. However, for those older than 80 years of age, surgical outcomes are associated with a morbidity rate of 51% and a mortality rate of 7%.

This case report describes MK, an 82-year-old Caucasian female who presented with extreme deterioration from OA in her left shoulder. Following treatment with arnica oil massage, acupuncture, and later therapeutic ultrasound, MK experienced reduction in pain after three weekly treatments. Over the course of treatment, pain continued to decrease, and she regained some functionality. After 36 treatments, she has majorly reduced medication use and has cancelled a total arthroscopy surgery.No study to date exists using the combination of acupuncture with therapeutic ultrasound and arnica oil massage.

Objectives:

Pain is the most common reason for physician consultation in all parts of the world. Neuralgia which is the occurrence of pain in the branches of a single nerve is a kind of chronic pain results from different sensory neural diseases. Although a number of drugs are available to treat pain, including non-steroidal, steroidal, and narcotic drugs, such drugs usually have side-effects like gastrointestinal bleeding over prolonged use, or can be addictive. Hence, the purpose of this study was to introduce medical plants and herbs mentioned in Avicenna's Canon for neuralgia.

Design

A descriptive review.

Methods

The most important Iranian medical and pharmaceutical manuscript known as Canon of Medicine was investigated. Research was conducted on neuralgia management using medical databases to compare traditional and current neuralgia treatment.

Results

Fifteen of the most recommended medical plants on controlling and relieving chronic neural pains, introduced in Canon, were pointed out.

Conclusion

Medicinal plants mentioned in the Canon of Medicine such as marshmallow and bitter almond showed anti-inflammatory or analgesic effects in the literature. To evaluate all these plants critically, high methodology randomized controlled clinical trials are advised.
